GREEN CROSS STANDARDS OF SELF-CARE

Only those who first care for themselves can provide high quality healthcare services to others.

Adapted from Dr. Charles R. Figley

Self-care combined with community/clinical care is healthcare. According to the World Health Organization, self-care involves the ability to promote and maintain health, prevent disease, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a professional helper. Self-care is an essential feature of salutogenesis and considered salutogenic primary care. The Green Cross Academy of Traumatology has established the national Standards of Self-Care as a foundation to building and supporting the bio-psycho-social-spiritual needs of healthcare generalists, practitioners, professionals, specialists, and managers/supervisors.
